Rector's Graduation Address In his Address for the third graduation ceremony held in December 2009, the Rector, Rev Dr Benhardt Y. Quarshie, drew attention to new opportunities for ACI that will expand the range of its ministry. Of these, three are already set to take off in 2010.
New MA variant An agreement has been reached with the Church of Pentecost and the Pentecost University College to offer a variant of the current MA (Theology and Mission) for graduate ministers of the COP. This will comprise much of the present MA, reconfigured into three blocks of four weeks, with a modification of some courses to make room for an additional focus on healing, exorcism and pneumatology. The project essay is extended from 10,000 to 13,000 words. Selection of candidates is in process, and the first block will be held at ACI in March 2010. It is anticipated that 25 students will take this new programme each year.
Presbyters Orientation Workshops An initiative of the Rector, which takes off in January 2010, is a series of workshops for new presbyters of the PCG, designed to equip them for their responsibilities as elders of congregations. Components of the programme include the need for orientation and the importance of leadership; the birth and journey of the PCG; the theological heritage of the PCG and its engagement with Ghanaian culture; Reformed polity in the PCG; the spirituality and ethos of the PCG; and the work of the presbyter in the PCG. The programme can be held either at ACI, or at a venue of the congregation’s, or district’s, choice.
The first of such workshops is scheduled to take place on 16 January 2010 at Shai Hills for the Osu District, and the second at ACI on 23 January for the New Aplaku congregation.
Encountering African Christianity Seminars An outcome of a promotional visit to the USA by the Rector and Deputy Rector in October 2009, was the ready appreciation of a new proposed initiative to offer short seminars for Christian visitors to Ghana on ‘Encountering African Christianity’, designed to acquaint them with the new developments taking place in African Christian life that have potential to contribute to Christian life around the world.
The first of these will be held for a group linked to the Ghana Mission Network of PC USA, coming to Ghana in late February 2010, under the leadership of Rev Peter deVries. The group will take a two-day seminar at ACI as part of the orientation for a trip to the north of Ghana. Topics to be covered will be ‘Learning from African Spirituality’, ‘Understanding Issues of Gospel and Culture’, ‘Developments in African Christianity and Their Implications for Discipleship and Witness’, and ‘Christian-Muslim Relations in an African Setting’.
The second of these, which hopefully will develop into a regular event, will be a two-week programme, from 6 to 20 November, called ‘Christian Visits with a Purpose to ACI: Encountering Wholeness in African Christianity’. The aim is to meet a felt need among American Christians (starting mainly with members of PC USA) for a meaning and purpose in life over and above professional and material success; to help them discover new dimensions to Christian worship, living and service through a variety of exposure experiences to African Christianity – including seminars at ACI, participation in worship, historical and cultural visits, and engagement with Christians and groups active in mission and service to the community. It is hoped that this programme will also provide one avenue whereby ACI and Ghanaian Christians can be agents of mission, by welcoming and showing hospitality to visitors who are coming to Ghana with the expectation of receiving and learning, as well as partnership and giving.
